The questions asked, what do baseball scouts look for. Well, basically they're looking for an athlete that has various tools. Now tools can be described as the attributes that the player would have in certain areas of the game of baseball.
First of all, they would look for a player that has a good body, and good body make up. The taller the better, unfortunately these days and also someone that's in very good shape. They're also looking for someone that has good foot speed. The average major leaguer should be able to run the sixty yard dash in about seven seconds flat. So they're looking at someone who can do that or better if at all possible.
They're also for someone that has the tool of arm strength, to be able to throw the ball accurately and can throw the ball great distances with a lot of velocity. Even the players that aren't pitchers need to have arm strength.
They're also looking for a player that would have soft hands and the ability to move quickly from side to side so that they could be good defensive players.
Also they would look for players that could hit the ball for average, hit the ball often but also hit the ball with power. Almost all the baseball players that are drafted today, not only have the ability to hit the baseball but they have the ability to hit the baseball with a great deal of power.
So they're looking for five tools. They're looking for people that can run, they can play defense, they can hit for average, they can hit for power and that has good arm strength and good body make up. One other thing that has become more of a factor this day is what they call make up. And make up means what kind of character does the player have. Is he someone that plays hard all the time or do you have someone that gives up when the going gets tough?
More and more because of the large dollars that are invested in players at this time, they want a good team player. Someone that's great in the clubhouse, someone that's going to work hard all the time and play day in and day out. We could talk for many hours on what makes up a baseball player, and all of these things come in to play. But the best thing that you could do is get your game the best that you can get it. have a great attitude, work hard in all that you do, get in front of some scouts and some showcases at any venue that you can get to and then you'll find out exactly what the scouts are looking for.
